May 13, 2020 – Red Deer, Alberta – Pure Life Carbon Inc. is pleased to announce the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has certified the Company’s Absolute Carbon and Charged Carbon products for sale in Canada.
Absolute Carbon is an enhanced type of biochar that is used primarily as a supplement to increase the fertility of soil in farm fields, or for soil blends in a greenhouse environment. For example, Absolute Carbon can be blended with peat to improve plant hardiness and crop yields.
Charged Carbon is a much more advanced product. It is the world’s first standalone, soilless grow medium based on biochar, and is infused with nutrients designed to greatly enhance plant growth. Several independent studies, including a five-year research project at Lethbridge College, have shown Charged Carbon can both increase the yield per crop and also shorten the crop cycle for fruit, vegetables and cannabis.
In a similar study at an Alberta-based hydroponic cannabis grower the use of Charged Carbon was found to increase annual crop yields per plant by 13 per cent over crops grown in Rockwool.
However, any biochar-related product must be certified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) before it can be blended with soil for the purpose of food production.
“This now opens the door for commercialization of this revolutionary new product,” said Pure Life Carbon CEO Ryan Rand. “For example, we have signed Letters of Intent with companies that want to buy our product, but we were unable to move forward until this certification process was complete. We certainly appreciate the CFIA’s diligent work in moving our application forward.”
PLC CTO Daniel Ronald says the Company’s primary target market is in the horticultural sector, selling a standalone, soilless grow medium for fruit, vegetable, ornamental plant and cannabis producers. CFIA approval was not legally required for these types of sales, but Ronald says certification is an important step nonetheless.
“Our clients in the horticultural industry take their customer safety very seriously, so gaining certification means our products satisfy internal QA/QC requirements for medically focused producers and growers are far more likely to buy the product, knowing it has gone through rigorous inspection by the CFIA,” Ronald explained.
The Company is currently raising funds for a $5 million production plant in Red Deer, Alberta, after which direct sales will begin to several producers who have already entered into Letters of Intent for a supply agreement.
